Ceiling Fans for Singapore Homes: How to Choose the Right One

Quick answer: For most Singapore homes, a DC ceiling fan with a remote is the easy choice: quiet, with more speed settings, and it runs happily for hours. Pick the blade size by room size, check how much space you have between the ceiling and your head, and plan the mounting before any false ceiling goes up.

A good ceiling fan is the difference between switching on the air-con at 7pm and switching it on at midnight. A badly chosen one wobbles, hums, or hangs so low that tall friends duck every time they walk past.

DC or AC motor?

Most new fans use DC motors. They are generally quieter, use less electricity than older AC fans, and come with more speed settings and a remote control, often with a sleep timer. AC fans are simpler and usually cheaper to buy. If the fan will run most nights in a bedroom, DC is worth it.

Choosing the blade size

Bigger rooms need a bigger blade span to move air to the corners. A compact fan suits a small bedroom or study, while an open living and dining area needs a bigger span. In long layouts, two smaller fans often cool more evenly than one big one. Bring your floor plan to our showroom and we will suggest a size for each room.

Low ceilings

Many Singapore homes have fairly low ceilings, especially once a false ceiling goes in. If that sounds like your flat, look at low-profile fans that sit close to the ceiling, or a shorter down rod. Measure from the floor to the ceiling and bring the number to our showroom, and we will show you models that suit.

False ceilings

A false ceiling board on its own is not built to hold a spinning fan. If you are adding a false ceiling during renovation, tell your contractor where the fans will go so the mounting can be fixed to the concrete slab above or properly reinforced.

Safety

Ceiling fans are Controlled Goods in Singapore, so the model you buy should carry the SAFETY Mark. Look for a safety wire, which holds the fan if the main mounting fails, and have the fan balanced during installation so it does not wobble.

Exhaust fans are a different story

In HDB flats, exhaust fans can only be installed in bathrooms. They are not allowed in the kitchen, service yard, balcony or bedrooms. For kitchen smoke, a cooker hood is the answer, see our cooker hood guide.

Browse ceiling fans online, or come and feel the airflow in person. We carry many more models in our showrooms than we list online.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a DC or AC ceiling fan?

For most homes, a DC fan is the easier choice. DC fans are generally quieter, use less electricity than older AC fans, and usually come with a remote and more speed settings. AC fans are simpler and cheaper to buy.

What ceiling fan should I get for a low ceiling?

Look at low-profile fans that sit close to the ceiling, or a model with a shorter down rod. Bring your floor to ceiling height to our showroom and we will suggest fans that suit.

Can I hang a ceiling fan from a false ceiling?

A false ceiling board alone should not carry the fan. The mounting should be fixed to the concrete slab above or the ceiling properly reinforced. Plan fan positions before the false ceiling goes up.

Can I install an exhaust fan in my HDB kitchen?

No. HDB only allows exhaust fans in bathrooms. Use a cooker hood to deal with kitchen smoke and oil.
