Gas Hob Buying Guide for Singapore: Town Gas vs LPG, Burners and Cut-Outs
Share
Most people start by choosing how a hob looks. It is better to start with two practical checks: what gas your home uses, and the size of the hole in your countertop. Get those right and the rest is personal taste.
Check 1: town gas or LPG?
A gas hob is set up for one gas type, so this comes first. Most HDB flats and many condominiums use piped town gas from City Energy. On our listings you will see this as PUB. Some homes use LPG from a cylinder instead. Tell us which one you have when you buy, so we supply the right version.
Town gas appliances in Singapore must be installed by City Energy or a licensed gas service worker, who will also test the connection before the gas is turned on.
Check 2: the cut-out
If you are replacing an old hob, the new one has to fit the opening in your countertop. Measure the length and depth of the cut-out and compare it with the cut-out size on the product page. Some hobs are designed with this in mind. The Rinnai RB-7302S-GBS and RB-7303S-GBSM, for example, have a flexible cut-out made to replace most older hobs.
Two burners or three?
| Option | Good for |
|---|---|
| 2 burners | Most small households, with more space around each pot |
| 3 burners | Cooking several dishes at once. Some 75 to 78cm hobs fit three burners without a wider cut-out |
| Domino (about 30cm) | A single or double burner module, often paired with an induction domino |
If you cook with a wok, look for a strong main burner. Inner flame and double ring burners focus the heat on the centre of the wok.
Glass or stainless steel?
Tempered or Schott glass tops look sleek and wipe clean easily. Stainless steel is hard wearing and shrugs off knocks from heavy pots. Both do the job well, so choose the one that suits your kitchen and the way you cook.
What about induction?
Induction heats quickly, is easy to clean and has no open flame. It does need magnetic cookware and the right power supply, although some 2-zone models, such as the Fujioh FH-ID5120, run on a normal 15A power point. A hybrid hob has one induction zone and one radiant zone that works with any pot. Many families keep a gas hob for wok cooking and add an induction domino beside it.
See all hoods and hobs, and save with a hood and hob package from Fujioh, Rinnai or Mayer.
