Lighting is one of the cheapest ways to make a home feel finished, and one of the easiest to get slightly wrong. A living room lit like a clinic, or a kitchen too dim to see if the chicken is cooked, is very fixable with a little planning.

Warm, neutral or cool white?

If you cannot decide, tunable white lights let you switch between warm and cool, which is handy in open living and dining spaces.

Which type of light for which room?

Ceiling lights give even, general light and work well in bedrooms without a false ceiling.
Downlights sit neatly in a false ceiling and give a clean look.
Track and magnetic track lights let you move and aim spotlights, great for feature walls and dining tables.
Light strips add soft accent light under cabinets, behind the TV or along a cove.

Layer your lighting

The best-lit homes use three layers: a main light to see by, task light where you work, such as under the kitchen cabinets or at a desk, and accent light for mood. Even one extra layer makes a big difference in the evening.

Plan before the ceiling goes up

If you are adding a false ceiling, mark your light and fan positions on the plan first. Adding lighting points in an HDB flat does not need an HDB permit, but it is much easier to do before the ceiling is closed.

Smart lighting: bulbs or switches?

Smart bulbs, like Philips Hue or WiZ, change colour and brightness from your phone. Keep the wall switch on so they stay connected.
Smart switches make ordinary lights controllable and work well for rooms where you just want on, off and schedules.
Philips Hue connects through a Hue Bridge for whole-home setups, while WiZ connects straight to your home Wi-Fi.

Energy use

LED bulbs use about 80% less electricity than halogen bulbs, according to NEA, and since 2023 all light bulbs sold in Singapore have to be at least as efficient as LED. When comparing lamps, the energy label ticks make it easy to spot the most efficient one.
