Warranty and After-Sales: What to Check Before You Buy Bathroom and Kitchen Fittings
Share
Quick answer: Before you buy, ask who handles the warranty, whether spare parts are stocked locally, and who you call if something goes wrong after installation. Keep your receipts and model numbers. Under Singapore's lemon law, if a product turns out to be defective within 6 months of delivery, it is presumed to have been defective from the start, and the retailer should repair or replace it.
Nobody enjoys thinking about what could go wrong with a brand new tap. But a few questions at the counter can save a lot of back and forth later, especially the dreaded warranty ping-pong, where the installer blames the product and the seller blames the installer.
Five questions to ask before you buy
- How long is the warranty, and what does it cover? Most warranties cover manufacturing defects, not wear and tear.
- Who handles the claim? The shop, the brand, or both?
- Are spare parts stocked in Singapore? A cartridge that is a phone call away beats one that needs an overseas order.
- Who installs it? Buying supply and installation from the same place means one team is responsible for both.
- Does it carry the SAFETY Mark? For electrical items like water heaters, induction hobs and ceiling fans, the SAFETY Mark shows the model meets Singapore's safety requirements.
Your rights under the lemon law
Singapore's lemon law, under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, protects you when goods do not meet the contract:
- If a defect is found within 6 months of delivery, it is assumed to have existed at delivery, unless the retailer can prove otherwise.
- You can ask the retailer to repair or replace the item first. If that is not possible within a reasonable time, you can ask for a price reduction or a refund.
- It applies to discounted and clearance items too.
- It does not cover damage from misuse, DIY repairs, or normal wear and tear.
Your first stop is always the retailer you bought from. If you cannot resolve it, the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) can help.
Keep a simple home file
- Receipts and invoices
- Warranty cards and registration confirmations
- Model numbers, or a photo of each product label
- Your installer's contact
A folder on your phone works perfectly. When you need a spare part in five years, you will thank yourself.

Frequently asked questions
What is the lemon law in Singapore?
It is part of the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act. If a product is found to be defective within 6 months of delivery, it is presumed to have been defective at delivery, and you can ask the retailer to repair or replace it, then for a price reduction or refund if that is not possible.
Does a warranty cover everything?
Usually it covers manufacturing defects, not wear and tear, damage from misuse, or problems caused by DIY repairs.
Why buy supply and installation from the same place?
One team is responsible for both the product and the installation, so you avoid being passed between the seller and the installer if something goes wrong.
