Gas or Induction Hob? How to Choose for a Singapore Kitchen
Share
Quick answer: Choose gas if you cook with a wok most days and want the flame wrapping around the pan. Choose induction if you want a flat top that wipes clean in seconds, no open flame and fast boiling, and you are happy to use flat, magnetic cookware. If you cannot decide, many Singapore kitchens use both: a gas hob for frying, with a small induction domino beside it for soups and slow cooking.
This is one of the few kitchen decisions that people feel strongly about. Here is how to make it without the family argument.
How they compare
| Gas hob | Induction hob | |
|---|---|---|
| Wok cooking | Flame heats the sides of a round wok | Heats the flat base only; use a flat-bottom wok |
| Cleaning | Burners, pan supports and caps to scrub | Flat glass surface |
| Cookware | Almost anything | Needs a magnetic base |
| Supply | Piped town gas or LPG cylinder | Suitable electrical power point |
| Kitchen heat | More heat escapes around the pan | Less heat escapes into the kitchen |
A quick cookware test: if a fridge magnet sticks firmly to the bottom of your pot, it will work on induction.
If you choose gas
- Match the gas type. Town gas and LPG are different gases, and each hob is built for one of them. Hobs in Singapore are usually labelled PUB (for piped town gas) or LPG, so just tell us which your home uses.
- Look for the SAFETY Mark. EMA recommends choosing a gas cooker with the SAFETY Mark label.
- Installation. Town gas hobs are connected by City Energy or a licensed gas service worker.
- An occasional check. EMA suggests having your gas pipes and kitchen appliances checked by a licensed gas service worker every five years, a bit like servicing a car.
Our gas hob buying guide covers burners, cut-outs and flame failure devices in more detail.
If you choose induction
- Check the power supply. Most homes can take an induction hob. In HDB flats with a 40 amp main switch, the hob should run on a 15 amp power point, and in older flats with a 30 amp main switch, HDB's limit is 3kW. The rated power is on the spec sheet, or tell us about your flat and we will help you pick a suitable model.
- Look for the SAFETY Mark. Induction hobs sold in Singapore carry it, so it is an easy check when comparing models.
- Cookware. Cast iron and most magnetic stainless steel pots work. Aluminium, copper and glass pots work only if they have a magnetic base.
Want both?
You do not have to choose one for life. Common combinations in Singapore homes:
- A 2 or 3 burner gas hob for daily frying, plus a small induction domino for soups, steaming and slow braising.
- A hybrid hob that combines an induction zone with a ceramic zone, so any pot works on one side.
- Induction as the main hob, with a portable gas stove kept for steamboat nights.
Switching from gas to induction
Easy to do. In an HDB flat, City Energy or a licensed gas service worker caps the gas pipe, leaving a short 100mm length at the wall. That makes it simple to go back to gas later if you change your mind.
Whichever you choose, the hood still matters
Induction makes less heat, but frying still makes oil and smoke. Size your hood to your hob and your cooking style with our cooker hood guide, and browse cooker hoods and hobs from Fujioh, Rinnai, Mayer, Bertazzoni and more.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an LPG gas hob on town gas?
Not as it is. EMA explains that appliances are designed for one type of gas, so choose the version made for your supply. Tell us which gas your home uses and we will supply the right one.
Can I install an induction hob in an HDB flat?
Yes. In flats with a 40 amp main switch, choose a hob that runs on a 15 amp power point. In older flats with a 30 amp main switch, HDB's limit is 3kW. We can help you pick a model that suits your flat.
Can I cook with a wok on induction?
Yes, with a flat-bottom wok that has a magnetic base. You get fast, even heat on the base, but not the flame around the sides that a gas burner gives.
What happens to the gas pipe if I switch to induction?
City Energy or a licensed gas service worker caps it, leaving a short length at the wall so you can switch back to gas later if you want to.
