Cooker Hoods and Hobs: Questions We Get Asked
What does PUB and LPG mean on a gas hob?
PUB refers to piped town gas and LPG refers to liquefied petroleum gas from a cylinder. A gas hob is set up for one gas type, so tell us which one your home uses when you order. Town gas appliances must be installed by City Energy or a licensed gas service worker.
Which cooker hood is best for wok cooking?
For heavy Asian cooking, choose a hood with strong suction and good oil filters. Chimney hoods usually have the most power, while slim hoods save space under the cabinet. A hood that is ducted to the outside removes smoke better than one that recirculates through a charcoal filter.
What size hood should I get for my hob?
The hood should be at least as wide as the hob, so smoke from the outer burners is still captured. For a standard 86 to 88cm hob, a 90cm hood is the usual choice.
I am replacing an old hob. What should I check?
Measure the cut-out in your countertop and compare it with the cut-out size on the product page. Some hobs have a flexible cut-out designed to fit the openings left by most older hobs.
Should I choose gas or induction?
Gas gives the high, direct flame many home cooks prefer for wok hei. Induction heats quickly, is easy to clean and does not produce a flame, but it needs magnetic cookware and the right power supply. Hybrid hobs combine an induction zone with a radiant zone that works with any pot. Our gas or induction guide compares them, including HDB power limits and switching from gas.
Is it cheaper to buy a hood and hob together?
Usually, yes. We offer hood and hob packages from Fujioh, Rinnai and Mayer that cost less than buying the two separately.
Are there full guides to choosing a hood and hob?
Yes. Read how to choose a cooker hood for wok cooking and our gas hob buying guide, which covers town gas and LPG, cut-outs, burners and induction.
